Week 4 Engaged Learning.

In my service Learning classroom the teacher does a lot that engages the students, from the way she teaches to the activities that they do.
I've mentioned before in previous blog posts that she lets the students chose a lot of what they do, because it is reading/English hour some students can find that very boring.
So instead of her choosing what to read to the students, she lets them pick what they want to read so they can pick something that is interesting to them.

This teacher also uses prizes and awards each day to engage them in listening. During the lesson, the table that gets their work first, or answers the most questions, or offers to read out load, etc gets to choose a prize from her cooler. To me it is interesting to see how a little cooler of treats can completely change how the children reacts to the lesson. The would do almost anything to get a piece of candy or a bag of chips out of the cooler.

The last thing she does that engages the student, is some independent study. When the students come back from lunch she has questions for the students listed on the board. They know when they come back to look at the questions and write them down in their notebook. The questions will words misspelled, that has to be fixed, or a sentence with incorrect punctuation, or a simple sort the words under noun, verb and adjective. She give the students a while for them to try and figure out what is wrong, and how they can fix it. She doesn't move on until all of the students get it written down. Then once everyone has an answer she then goes over the answers, and helps the students correct their mistakes.

Overall it seems like the students enjoy themselves while I am there, I don't see much of them throwing a fit, or not wanting to do the lesson that is needed for the day. Them seem to have fun, and the teacher also likes to have fun.
