Week 1: Taking a Look in the Classroom

Being a teacher is something that has always appealed to me. I have always loved going to school and learning new things, so being able to do that for a career was like a dream come true. Knowing I will be able to continue learning each day, but also teaching children and helping them learn and come up with new ideas and spike their curiosity. So the school I chose to do my service learning was an intermediate school for 5th and 6th graders.  I lucked out finding a place, as my mother in law and my father in law are both teachers. I have prime examples of the accomplishment they show when they teach students something new, and the love and compassion they have for their students.

So I am able to learn first hand from some of the best teachers I know. When I went to check out the school the first thing I noticed was how close the school was to the high school. I also noticed that it seemed very average. It had decorated classrooms from the teachers and the classes were full of students engaged in learning. Well, the students looked engaged at least.

The school seems to thrive to do better and to test better each year. Everyone seemed happy to work there and only had nice things to say. I am excited to be in an actual classroom and learn what it will be like to teach and to see different situations that arise as a teacher.

I am thrilled to be doing service learning. I am someone who learns best when I can gain experiences and apply it to my life. So being able to watch a teacher and to see the day to day and experience some of the same things as teachers I know will only help me learn more and gain a better understanding of teaching.
